My Story

Our mum was one of those rare people whose warmth and kindness stayed with you. She could strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere, and made everyone feel welcome. She loved cooking for family, long walks in nature, playing golf, and relaxing under the Spanish sun, but above all, she cherished time with her family and we cherished her.

In August 2024, we learned that the breast cancer Mum had lived with for eight years had spread to her brain. With the incredible support of the Arthur Rank Hospice at Home team, we were able to care for her in her own home during the final weeks of her life. What we expected to feel clinical was instead gentle, personal, and deeply human.

The small team who supported Mum treated her with dignity, compassion, and genuine care. They took time to talk, laugh, and truly know her — and they supported us too, checking in, offering reassurance, and sometimes just a much-needed hug. Their kindness gave us the precious gift of simply being a family together. Mum passed away peacefully at home at the end of September 2024.

Experiencing this level of care for someone so loved leaves a lasting impact. It’s why we’re determined to give something back and help ensure Hospice at Home services can continue supporting other families when they need it most.

So we are now taking on the Cambridge to Ely Trek together — as Mum’s girls — in her memory. Every donation, no matter the size, helps make compassionate end-of-life care possible for families like ours.
